Procrastination - I
(What is Procrastination?)

By Figen Genco

“Whenever I feel like exercise, I lie down until the feeling passes!” (Anonymous)

Funny, but true for procrastinators. They will engage in every other thing just not to do what they are supposed to do. Getting involved with different tasks, projects, games, or just idle talking are some of the ways for a procrastinator to make the time pass before he can get to what he actually needs to do. However; as Virgil states “Time is flying never to return.”

Did you know that on the Internet there are actually websites to procrastinate? The site opens with “Never underestimate the power of procrastination! A well-spent hour of goofing can focus your attention the rest of the day.” There are different options to click on to procrastinate such as comics, cartoons, and games. While doing my research on procrastination, I also found a website from which one can send a greeting card to a procrastinator to encourage him to start working.

Procrastination is an ancient Latin word. Pro means forward, cras means tomorrow. Thus the word indicates forwarding it to tomorrow. Unfortunately, for a procrastinator tomorrow is always tomorrow even when tomorrow becomes today.

One definition of the word is “to delay in doing something- repeatedly and without good reasons.” I do not agree with that. There is always a reason. I describe the word as ”doing anything other than the task that you have been turning in your mind over and over but for a reason you can not bring yourself to start doing it.” The danger starts when this scared-to-move mode becomes habitual. Then you are in a downward spiral in which you end up not being able to get anything done.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is then, not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle
